Take me away

…if you look at the most successful sites which link out — Fark, Reddit, Techmeme, Memeorandum, Drudge (and Drudge above all) — they’re all incredibly ugly. And I’ve come to the conclusion that that’s actually as much a feature as it is a bug. The ugly is good, because it drives you away. And the reason you go to that website is to be driven away.”

With that in mind, “we’re aggressively anti-pageview,” Salmon says. “We don’t want people to stay on that site. We just want people to go away.”

“And then,” McCarthy says, “to come back.”

Felix Salmon and Ryan McCarthy, my favorite Odd Couple of Reuters, discuss “Counterparties” with Megan Garber at Nieman Lab (via soupsoup)

Los Campesinos! - “By Your Hand”

A little more than two years ago, a friend brought me to the Granada Theater in Dallas to see a band called Los Campesinos! that I had heard of but had really not listened to. Not only was the show itself the most wildly euphoric and energetic things I’d ever seen, but the band was full of some of the most grateful people, easily still excited about the following they had gained. After the show, they had all gone to the back (with the exception of Gareth at the merch table and Ollie cleaning up equipment) to smoke and chat. Maybe it was because the show was one of Aleks’ last shows or maybe it was because they always do this, but the band chatted with us until at least three in the morning, exclaiming with glee upon seeing my friend’s Dirty Projectors t-shirt (to this day, I still imagine their band name being said with a British accent) and sharing their sincere and down-to-earth thoughts about album leaks (come on, everyone; the album release date is one of the few things that artists should have control over). That night ended up being one of the best nights of my life, and Los Campesinos! became one of my favourite bands.

I guess that this post is sentimental, but listen to any Los Campesinos! and you’ll note that they are, too. Gareth’s not afraid to speak extremely frankly and maybe even uncomfortably about his past loves, and apparently the newest record Hello Sadness (how’s that for a title?) that comes out November 14th is not only not an exception, but probably the best example of that claim. “By Your Hand” is the first song released, and my god is the chorus MASSIVE. What a fantastic direction the band’s taken since Romance is Boring. Call these kids twee and they’ll probably cut you.

Download “By Your Hand” (for FREE!) on their website now, and definitely pre-order Hello Sadness on the Los Campesinos! website.

The Rapture - “Sail Away”

2011’s been a year full of chatter about raptures, hasn’t it? Thankfully, this post’s about The Rapture, a band with drums you can stomp around to, synths you can nod and bop your head to, and soaring vocals that you can sing along to. They’re back after five years and some inner band turmoil, and they sound fantastic.

We’re pleased to announce the addition of Zach to our writing staff. He’s contributed some really spectacular tracks in the past, and now he’ll provide great commentary to bumpin’ tunes. Plus, he’s a pretty damn phenomenal guy, too. Welcome!
